Our culture, our passion, our inspiration

Breyten Breytenbach Boekefees/Literary Festival 2013

BBB 2013 Event poster for webThe Breyten Breytenbach Literary Festival or “Boekefees” now moving into its 2nd year, began with a spark of synchronicity between literary festival organizer Darryl David and RAD Foundation CEO Helen Gooderson in 2011.

Darryl had always dreamed of making the Karoo region of South Africa into the literary heartland of our beautiful country. With many other literary festivals tucked neatly under his belt: the Schreiner Festival in Cradock, the J.M. Coetzee Festival in Richmond and the Fugard Festival in Nieu- Bethesda), the Breyten Breytenbach Festival in Montagu now completes his vision.

With the RAD Foundation’s focus on inspiring the youth in all aspects of the arts, it should come as no surprise that Helen would take up the task of assisting Darryl in getting this festival off the ground.

Festivals of this nature require passion and dedication which both Darryl and Helen have in abundance.

Darryl and “a Jack Russell of an organiser” as he has called Helen are now very busy with preparations for this years festival which promises some interesting authors and speakers covering a wide range of topics.

This year the venue for speakers will be the NG Church Hall.

Montagu will be alive and vibrant during the festival with many opportunities for visitors to experience Klein Karoo hospitality.

Be sure not to miss the Sunday picnic with Poetic Music by Danelle de Vries and Bernard Kruger, weaved with short readings by Emmaleen Kriel. This is going to be an absolute hit for both visitors and locals alike!

Done and dusted. So chuffed with my book purchases! My first Afrikaans books… naturally they are arty books. What an awesome time I had during this festival. Sadly I could not be there for the picnic with Danelle de Vries. Now, we can begin the process of formulating ideas and plans for next year.
