He has worked in mineral exploration in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Brazil and Chile, undertaking, in addition, shorter term assignments elsewhere in South America and Africa.
In the 1970s he served as honorary secretary to the Geological Society of SA.
He currently divides his time between working as a consulting geologist in various parts of Africa and writing books on geology for the popular market.
He published Geological Journeys in 2006, The Extraordinary World of Diamonds in 2010, and the latest, a companion to the first and to be called Geology off the beaten track is due for release in November this year.
He lives with his wife in Franschhoek, one child having recently graduated, the other still studying.
